India and Denmark are enhancing their strategic collaboration with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, and bilateral trade. During a recent visit to Mumbai and New Delhi on November 2–3, Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard engaged with Indian officials and business leaders to explore avenues for economic cooperation. The discussions underscored India’s growing significance as a strategic partner and Denmark’s commitment to supporting India’s green transition.
The two nations are poised to advance their Green Strategic Partnership, initiated in 2020, by developing a new joint action plan aimed at strengthening ties in areas of mutual environmental and economic interest. In Mumbai, Minister Lidegaard toured APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk, and held talks with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma about investment prospects.
In New Delhi, Lidegaard’s discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on expanding bilateral trade and enhancing business opportunities, particularly within the context of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, employing more than 100,000 people across various sectors.
The visit also highlighted potential collaborations in sustainable maritime development. Talks with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal centered on eco-friendly shipping practices, modern port infrastructure, and establishing green maritime corridors.
Renewable energy cooperation was a significant agenda item, with discussions involving Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasizing energy efficiency, clean energy infrastructure, and supporting India’s sustainable power system transition. Denmark’s role as an international partner in solar energy development and contributor to the International Solar Alliance further underscores the country’s commitment to renewable energy initiatives.
Through these strengthened partnerships, both countries anticipate new opportunities for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, ultimately deepening economic ties between India and Denmark.
