India is progressing with its strategy to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia. Moscow has already provided a cost proposal, which will initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final approval for this acquisition is anticipated from the Cabinet Committee on Security once the price discussions are concluded and the Finance Ministry gives its clearance. This move follows the initial 2018 agreement, where India contracted for five S-400 systems at $5.43 billion, with the last of these systems scheduled for delivery by November 2026.
The additional S-400 systems are aimed at bolstering India’s air defence, especially in the eastern sector that shares a border with China. The effectiveness of the S-400 was notably demonstrated during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, which has further supported India’s decision to expand its fleet of these systems. The system’s performance during this operation has been a strong factor in considering more units to enhance national security capabilities.
In parallel, India has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. While the Indian Air Force has shown interest in the proposal, no commitment has been made as of yet. This interest comes in the context of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in the Tibetan region, which may influence India’s future defence procurement strategies.
The anticipated acquisition of additional S-400 systems is likely to be a key topic in broader defence discussions between India and Russia. This is particularly timely as Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India for the BRICS summit in September. His visit may further cement bilateral defence ties and potentially lead to more agreements in the defence sector.
