Nana Patekar: Celebrated Bollywood Actor and Director Dies at 75

Nana Patekar, a celebrated figure in Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. His illustrious career, spanning nearly five decades, left an indelible mark on Bollywood, challenging traditional notions of stardom through his intense performances and complex character portrayals.

Born in Maharashtra in 1951 as Vishwanath Patekar, he embarked on his cinematic journey with the 1978 film “Gaman” and gained recognition in Marathi cinema. His breakthrough came with “Aaj Ki Awaz” in 1984, and it was “Ankush” in 1986 that firmly established him as a force in portraying emotionally charged, unconventional characters. Patekar’s role in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” garnered widespread acclaim, while his performance in “Parinda” earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Despite initial supporting roles, Patekar successfully transitioned to lead roles with films such as “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. His directorial debut, “Prahaar” in 1991, showcased his versatility and commitment to storytelling. Patekar’s range was further evidenced by his performances in comedies like “Welcome,” where his role as Uday Shetty highlighted his exceptional comic timing, as well as films like “Bluffmaster!” and “Phir Hera Pheri.”

His career also included significant roles in serious dramas and action films such as “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the acclaimed Marathi film “Natsamrat.” Despite his achievements, Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment on the set of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss,” allegations that Patekar denied. The Mumbai police later filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence, and the case became a focal point in India’s #MeToo movement.

Throughout his career, Patekar remained a distinctive presence in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, with performances that emphasized emotional authenticity and character depth over conventional heroism. His legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of performers, cementing his place as one of India’s most remarkable actors.
