Delhi-NCR Activates Pollution Control Measures as Air Quality Worsens

In response to a decline in air quality, Delhi-NCR has initiated Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This action comes after the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi reached 233, categorizing the air as poor. The measures are designed to curb pollution sources and prevent further environmental degradation in the region.

The implementation of GRAP Stage I involves several key measures aimed at reducing pollution. These include enforcing dust control at construction sites, prohibiting open waste burning, and promoting the use of cleaner fuels in commercial eateries. Additionally, restrictions are placed on the usage of diesel generators, and authorities are tasked with monitoring vehicle emissions to ensure compliance with pollution standards. Traffic management strategies are also being put in place to reduce congestion and encourage drivers to switch off engines at red lights, while industrial units must adhere to applicable emission standards.

Residents have been advised to maintain their vehicles, minimize unnecessary idling, utilize public transportation whenever possible, and report any pollution-related issues through designated government platforms. These steps are critical as the city’s AQI, situated between 201 and 300, poses risks of breathing discomfort, especially to individuals with pre-existing respiratory or health conditions.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 18°C, with daytime highs expected to reach around 31°C. Temperature variations were noted across different monitoring stations, ranging from approximately 17.7°C to 19.1°C. Authorities continue to closely monitor pollution levels to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate further, reinforcing the importance of these preventive measures.
