During a visit to Beijing, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, emphasizing the crucial need for peace along their shared border to foster improved bilateral relations. This interaction marked the 25th installment of talks between special representatives from both nations, focusing on the enduring boundary dispute. The dialogue aimed at advancing boundary delimitation, reinforcing border management, and enhancing cooperation across the frontier.
Both countries took the opportunity to positively assess the progress in their bilateral relations, deliberating on strategies to ensure stability along the Line of Actual Control. There was a mutual reaffirmation of their dedication to pursuing a political resolution to the boundary issue, considering their long-term interests. The talks build on the developments since an agreement was reached in 2024 between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which sought to reduce tensions in the Ladakh region. This agreement had facilitated the resumption of cultural exchanges, including the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and the reopening of border trade through designated routes.
Ajit Doval highlighted that the gradual normalization of bilateral relations was intricately linked to the sustained peace along the border. Meanwhile, China underscored the importance of situating the boundary issue within its proper context in the broader scope of the relationship. Despite the constructive tone of the talks, neither side divulged substantial details regarding the delineation of the disputed boundary. Both nations agreed to persist with negotiations, planning to hold the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
