IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has decided to halt its Mumbai-Manchester route temporarily starting August 31, 2026. The airline attributes this suspension to enduring airspace limitations, prolonged flight durations, and escalating operational costs. These challenges are part of broader issues plaguing the aviation sector, including geopolitical tensions, increased fuel prices, and disrupted flight paths, all of which have made long-haul operations more expensive.
The airline’s decision will see the return of one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to Norse Atlantic Airways, from which IndiGo had leased six such aircraft in early 2025. This move was initially aimed at boosting their European market presence until their own Airbus A350 fleet could be deployed. The suspension is specified as a temporary measure, with IndiGo assuring that its other international long-haul services will continue uninterrupted.
While the route suspension may seem like a setback, IndiGo’s expansion into Europe has been met with enthusiastic customer demand, significantly strengthening its foothold in major global markets. Yet, the financial viability of the Manchester route has been strained by extended flight times due to airspace restrictions, coupled with rising aviation fuel prices and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.
Abhijit Dasgupta, the airline’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, called the decision unfortunate but necessary given the current circumstances. He emphasized the positive customer feedback received for the Mumbai-Manchester service and expressed optimism about resuming operations once conditions improve.
IndiGo is actively seeking alternative strategies to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways and advance its long-term goals for international expansion.
