In a strategic move to enhance bilateral ties, India and Switzerland have signed five significant agreements aimed at boosting cooperation across various sectors, including trade, technology, and mobility. The agreements were finalized during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, underscoring the commitment of both nations to deepen their partnership.
The agreements focus on several key areas: migration and mobility, young professional exchanges, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. A pivotal aspect of these agreements is the migration and mobility partnership, which aims to tackle issues such as irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years, as well as renewable permits for students. Additionally, an agreement facilitates the exchange of up to 300 young professionals annually, enabling them to gain temporary employment and professional experience in each other’s countries.
Trade and economic cooperation were also central to the discussions, with both countries agreeing to improve market access for Indian exports and encourage Swiss investment. The dialogue took place on the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which seeks to enhance trade and investment between India and the EFTA countries. India is keen on accessing Swiss markets, particularly for its agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods, while Switzerland is encouraged to invest in sectors like biotechnology, life sciences, and sustainability.
In addition to trade and mobility, India and Switzerland are set to explore greater collaboration in defense, nuclear energy, and technology sectors. Plans are underway to initiate joint research projects focusing on health, clean energy, and space, alongside fostering cooperation in transportation technologies and sustainable infrastructure development.
The dialogue between the two leaders also touched upon global and regional issues, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to address conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and West Asia. The five agreements are expected to strengthen ties between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies across both nations, fostering a robust framework for future cooperation.
