Thailand is set to modify its visa policies, ending the 60-day visa-free entry scheme that has been beneficial for travelers from several countries, including India. This shift signifies a return to more stringent entry requirements, potentially influencing how Indian tourists plan their visits to one of Asia’s top vacation spots. Under the new rules sanctioned by Thai officials, Indian passport holders will no longer be able to enjoy the extended visa-free stay. Instead, they will need to secure a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon entering Thailand or apply for an e-Visa before their trip.

The Visa on Arrival permits Indian tourists to stay in Thailand for up to 15 days per entry, a notable reduction from the previous 60-day period. For those wishing to avoid queues at the airport, an online application through Thailand’s official e-Visa system is available before traveling. Industry analysts suggest that this policy change may curb spontaneous travel and last-minute holiday bookings due to the extra paperwork, application steps, and associated visa fees. Nonetheless, Thailand is anticipated to remain an attractive destination for Indian travelers, thanks to its affordability, convenient flight routes, diverse tourist attractions, and robust hospitality industry.

The revised visa rules are likely to have a more substantial impact on long-term visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extended multi-city trips. Travelers seeking longer, more flexible stays might explore other Southeast Asian destinations with easier entry procedures. According to Thai authorities, the updated regulations will be enforced 15 days after their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers who enter Thailand before the enforcement date will continue to be subject to the previous rules, allowing them to remain until their granted stay period concludes.

Initially, Thailand introduced the expanded visa-free access in 2024 to help rejuvenate tourism and boost economic recovery post-pandemic. This policy succeeded in increasing visitor numbers and solidifying Thailand’s status as a favored destination for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events. Officials have noted that the decision to tighten entry regulations is driven by concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the need for improved immigration oversight. The new framework aims to strike a balance between promoting tourism growth and enhancing border management and regulatory control.

Prospective travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry protocols before booking their flights and accommodations to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.
