In a significant development aimed at combating drug trafficking, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 initiative, which seeks to eliminate the movement of illicit drugs across India’s borders. The comprehensive strategy is built around three primary objectives: cutting the supply of drugs, reducing their demand, and minimizing harm associated with drug use. Since 2019, the Indian government has been actively engaged in a national campaign to dismantle drug networks across the country.
To achieve these goals, the government has put several measures in place. Among them is the four-tier NCORD mechanism, which is designed to enhance coordination among various agencies. Additionally, Anti-Narcotics Task Forces have been established in all states and Union Territories, supported by a national helpline for rehabilitation efforts. The NIDAN database serves as a centralized repository for tracking narcotics offenders, while data-driven mapping techniques are used to identify drug networks and hotspots more effectively.
Shah highlighted the significant progress made in recent years, noting that enforcement agencies had seized over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs valued at more than ₹19,600 crore from 2020 to July 2026. The total volume of narcotic and psychotropic substances confiscated from 2019 to July 2026 amounted to an impressive 93.34 lakh kg. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to tackling the drug menace head-on.
Additionally, authorities have targeted the financial underpinnings of drug networks by seizing properties worth ₹1,841 crore across 3,016 cases from 2024 to June 2026. This approach not only disrupts the flow of illegal drugs but also weakens the economic foundations of those involved in drug trafficking. Such measures are part of a broader strategy to dismantle both the supply chains and the financial networks supporting narcotics distribution.
During an official visit to Goa, Shah took the opportunity to review the state’s security preparedness. However, he had to cut his schedule short and return to Delhi. The launch of the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 initiative marks a critical step in India’s ongoing fight against drugs, reflecting the government’s resolve in addressing this pressing issue through coordinated and robust action.
