Indian Pilot Thwarts Co-Pilot’s Cockpit Attack on Flydubai Flight

During a critical flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar faced a life-threatening situation when he was attacked by his co-pilot. Machchhar, who is currently recuperating in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, recounted the harrowing incident, emphasizing his determination to regain control of the aircraft to ensure the safety of the passengers on board.

The attack occurred mid-flight on a Boeing 737 carrying 182 passengers. Despite sustaining multiple injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers to enter and restrain the co-pilot. The aircraft was undergoing a steep descent at the time, and Machchhar’s quick actions were crucial in diverting the plane safely to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia for an emergency landing.

The motive behind the co-pilot’s attack, who is an Omani national, remains under investigation. Following the incident, the co-pilot was detained by authorities in Saudi Arabia. Machchhar shared that he found strength in reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer, which provided him with courage during the ordeal.

Born in Mumbai, Captain Machchhar has been with flydubai for approximately four years, bringing extensive experience from over a decade with SpiceJet and thousands of hours of flight time. His dedication to his role and the passengers’ safety was evident in his swift response to the emergency situation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Machchhar via a video call, acknowledging his bravery and quick thinking during the crisis. As investigations continue, Machchhar’s actions serve as a testament to his commitment to aviation safety and the lives entrusted to his care.
