The Indian government has called upon Meta’s top executives to address pressing compliance issues. Central to these discussions are the inadvertent temporary removal of a Facebook Reel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the oversight in managing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Instagram, and concerns over WhatsApp’s upcoming username feature. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has initiated this meeting to scrutinize Meta’s adherence to India’s digital regulations.
A significant point of contention is the mistaken removal of content from the Prime Minister’s official Facebook account, despite Meta’s sophisticated content moderation tools. The deleted video, which was quickly restored, involved the Prime Minister discussing the NEET-UG paper leak, proposing solutions such as the establishment of fast-track courts and imposing harsher penalties for exam paper leaks. Meta responded to the situation by acknowledging the error and reportedly issued an apology to the Indian government.
Further discussions will center on Instagram’s approach to handling CSAM-related content and its advertisements. The platform has been given directives to eliminate such material, reflecting broader concerns about safeguarding users from harmful content. The government aims to ensure that Meta’s platforms align with India’s expectations for content regulation and user safety.
Another focal point in the talks will be the proposed username feature on WhatsApp. Authorities fear that this addition could heighten the risk of impersonation, phishing, identity theft, and online fraud. The government has requested that WhatsApp halt the rollout of this feature until thorough consultations can be conducted to assess its potential implications.
During these discussions, the government is also expected to emphasize the necessity for Meta to adhere more strictly to India’s IT Rules. This encompasses crucial areas such as dealing with AI-generated content, maintaining public order, and ensuring platform accountability. The meeting underscores the broader effort to strengthen digital compliance and address emerging challenges in India’s rapidly evolving online landscape.
