In a gripping finale at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold by defeating Pakistan with a 19-run victory. This win marked a successful defense of their title, further solidifying India’s supremacy in T20 internationals against their arch-rivals.
India, opting to bat first, set an imposing target of 212 runs. The innings began with a strong foundation laid by Abhishek Sharma, who delivered a rapid half-century, propelling India to their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20Is at 81/2. Despite a mid-inning slowdown thanks to effective bowling by Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, India’s momentum was reignited by Tilak Varma. Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls, in tandem with Shivam Dube’s contribution of 27, pushed India past the 200-run mark.
Chasing 212, Pakistan fought valiantly with Hasan Nawaz leading their response. Nawaz’s unbeaten 96 off 51 balls, supported by an 87-run partnership with Saim Ayub, kept Pakistan in contention and applied significant pressure on India. However, India’s bowlers regained control at crucial moments. Washington Sundar’s tight bowling in the 18th over and Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined penultimate over were instrumental in reining in Pakistan’s run chase.
Entering the final over, Pakistan needed an improbable 33 runs. Shivam Dube’s composed bowling ensured India maintained their grip on the match, ultimately securing a 19-run triumph. This victory not only earned India the gold medal but also extended their winning record over Pakistan in T20 international encounters.
