Upon full implementation, initiating a chat will require only a username, thus eliminating the need to disclose one’s mobile number.
The system is designed to enable users to create a distinctive handle within the app. To initiate contact, someone would only need to know this username, as phone numbers will remain hidden. Should a desired username already be in use, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions via a built-in generator. Notably, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can reach out.
To reserve a username, users can check its availability by updating their app and navigating to the following: Settings → Account → Username. Given WhatsApp’s extensive user base, securing a popular username could be competitive, so reservations are being offered early. The platform will inform users when this feature becomes accessible in their specific region.
Adding to the privacy measures, WhatsApp will offer an optional “username key,” serving as an additional security layer. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who is authorized to start conversations with them.
