The government of West Bengal has taken a significant step in preserving the cultural heritage of the state by allocating ₹5 lakh to each of 60 Rath Yatra committees for the upkeep of historic chariots. This initiative marks the first instance of direct financial assistance from the state for the traditional Rath Yatra festivities. Many of these wooden chariots, some dating back centuries, are in dire need of maintenance and repair, as highlighted by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who called on the committees to utilize the funds for their restoration and preservation efforts.
In addition to the financial support for the Rath Yatra, the state has also planned a spectacular display for the devotees participating in the 30-km Shravan Yatra in Tarakeshwar, Hooghly district. The government will arrange for helicopters to scatter flower petals over the attendees, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the event. To further enhance the experience and ensure safety, Seva Kendras will be set up at 75 fair locations, offering medical aid, police assistance, drinking water, and other essential services to the pilgrims.
Looking ahead, West Bengal’s government aims to extend this financial support to even more Rath Yatra committees, acknowledging the cultural significance of these celebrations. This initiative is part of a broader plan to invest ₹1,000 crore over the next three years in developing the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. The project is designed to promote pilgrimage tourism, restore historic temples, and boost religious tourism in the region.
