Delhi is set to introduce a new ferry service on the Yamuna River, branded “Namo Yamuna,” just in time for the Chhath Puja festival, which will be observed from November 13 to 16. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made the announcement during her inspection of the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and her visit to Sur Ghat, the site designated for Chhath celebrations. This initiative aims to transform the area into a scenic picnic spot for families to enjoy the riverside ambiance and participate in religious observances.
The ferry service will operate between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering approximately five kilometers of the Yamuna River. The one-hour cruise promises passengers picturesque views of the riverbanks and the ghats. Tickets for this experience are expected to cost around ₹500 per person. The project, which initially faced delays due to incomplete work, is now ready to launch with the ferry’s jetties equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas.
The vessel, a 40-foot catamaran-style boat named Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. Its design is tailored for stability and navigation through the river’s shallow stretches, ensuring a smooth journey for passengers.
The introduction of this ferry service aligns with efforts to enhance the recreational and cultural appeal of the Yamuna River area, offering both locals and tourists a unique way to engage with Delhi’s natural and cultural heritage. As preparations continue for the upcoming Chhath Puja, the launch of the Namo Yamuna service is anticipated to be a focal point of the festivities, providing an added dimension to the celebrations.
